The ‘Vardia’ Hotel (lit. “change of guard”) is so
named because the hotel is located right next to the famous
old guarding tower on the high hill just behind Kardamyli.
Here, 400 years ago, Kardamyliot soldiers used to stand watch
over the old village and, from this unique vantage point, they
would protect the inhabitants against invasion from pirates
and renegades. Nowadays, the view is more important than defence.
Below everything is visible – the old village, the new village,
the bay, southern Mani, and right across the Messinian Gulf
and the western peninsula of the Peloponnese. |

Less than 1km south of Kardamyli, the visitor comes to Kalamitsi,
a place that epitomizes the notion of natural beauty. The hotel
here clearly pays tribute to the architectural traditions of
the Mani. Made of local stone with an impressive ceramic tiled
roof, the hotel is set in an olive grove within a stones throw
of the sea. Kalamitsi Hotel Bungalows, PONIREA S.A. |

"Elixirion" Guesthouse
is situated in the tiny but historically strategic hamlet of
Karavostasi, beneath the ancient village of Oitylo. From here
it is just a stone’s throw to the Kelefa Castle and the seventeenth
century monastery of Dekoulou. The breakfast is a real treat: home-made specialities fresh from the oven. The welcome here is warm and genuine: the whole experience intended to be a spiritual retreat. From June to October boat trips are available (not just to hotel guests) along the coast to remote beaches and caves inaccessible by foot. These trips reveal the rich history of piracy and conflict in the Mani and offer opportunities to swim in crystal clear waters, snorkel in the huge caves, and perhaps glimpse a turtle! For further exploration of this wild landscape, there are opportunities to go on organized hikes with an experienced guide, go fishing, or even diving. Elixirion |

Kapetanakos Tower is situated in Areopolis, capital of the Mani, 330km south east of Athens. Built in 1865, it is a perfect example of the unique stone architecture of the Mani peninsula. It has recently been restored with meticulous attention to detail, maintaining its original defensive character while instilling a little more comfort and style to the interior. It now functions as a guest house with 7 bedrooms: 2 double rooms, 3 triple rooms and 2 five-bed rooms with an open attic area. All rooms have en suite bathrooms, air-conditioning, TV and fridge, and combine good taste with functionality. The communal areas are designed to give a feeling of being in a “home”, so breakfast is served at one big table inside the traditional vaulted dining room. The beautiful garden outside is a haven of tranquillity, the ideal place to sit and read or chat with friends. Kapetanakos Tower |

The Kyrimai Hotel in Gerolimenas has a long history. 130 years
ago two traders, Michalis Katsimatis from Syros and Theodore
Kyrimis from the Mani, began to develop the commercial potential
of the Mani through the tiny port of Gerolimenas. The resulting
warehousing has been converted into a hotel that offers guests
the chance to journey into the past whilst enjoying the comfort
of the present. The reception has exhibits that chart the
development of trade in Greece in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Kyrimai Hotel |

Here beneath the barren mountains at the extreme tip of the wild Mani peninsula, nestles the village of Porto Kagio, or “Bay of Quails”, with its five permanent inhabitants. It is the most beautiful natural harbour, calm as a lake in contrast with the windswept seas beyond Cape Tenaron. Life slows down here and immediately the warm welcome and tranquil atmosphere of this small haven charms each and every visitor. Simple and unpretentious, with rooms situated right on the beach, Akrotiri is the ideal place to stay for a genuine retreat. Porto Kagio is the perfect base from which to explore the many hidden coves and discover the ancient treasures scattered over the hillsides which reveal the fascinating history of this remote place. There is also the opportunity to take a private boat trip around Cape Tainaron and to visit caves and small alternative beaches accessible only by sea. The bay itself is a wonderful place for safe wind-surfing. Such a romantic setting is hard to find and draws people back year after year. Here you will savour exceptional cuisine:
accompanied by good wines or ouzo, the fish and seafood are
as fresh as it gets, and the warmth and hospitality of the
place is unmatched. There
are 9 rooms, all with air-conditioning, fridge, phone and satellite
TV. Open all summer and during the winter at weekends |
